When I started freelance writing, back in the day, I worked as a fact checker at
Whittle Communications, LLC, a publishing company that was based in Knoxville, Tennessee. I wrote articles for some of their publications. During that time, I started writing articles for Storytelling Magazine.
Fun fact: I have a background in comedy and humor writing. I've
written comedy sketches, and stand-up routines. I've been trained in
and have performed in an improvisation troupe. I write plays,
monologues, and short stories, so dialogue is easy for me!
At Whittle Communications, I fact-checked several different publications and learned to become an instant expert while making sure copy was error free. I fact checked a magazine for travel agents, a health magazine, a magazine for dental hygienists -- about 15 publications, in all. Later, when I moved to New York, I fact-checked for Ladies' HomeJournal. Fact-checking was good training for feature writing.
As a freelance writer, I've written about subjects as diverse as pets, agriculture and soil science, playwrights, safety, alternative/complementary medicine, highway ice and snow removal technology, corporate governance, and storytelling.
As a stringer for the Knoxville News-Sentinel, I wrote advertorials for the newspaper's supplements and stories about new businesses in Knoxville and the surrounding area.
I penned articles for Tennessee Green as a member of its editorial board.
